Pohang Mayor Lee Kangdeok Conducts On-Site Inspection for Summer Rainy Season Disaster Preparedness! Lee Gangdeok, mayor of Pohang, is visiting the disaster recovery project site on the 3rd to check the construction status.

On this day, Mayor Lee visited the disaster recovery sites in succession, urging those involved to do their utmost to prevent the recurrence of damage, and stated that he would pay even closer attention to safety to ensure that citizens are not harmed during heavy rainfall.

Naengcheon and Chilseongcheon are local streams that overflowed during Typhoon Hinnamnor, flooding nearby residential and agricultural areas. In response, Gyeongbuk Province launched the 'Naengcheon and Chilseongcheon Disaster Recovery Project' in May last year, investing 98.2 billion KRW.

Currently, at the Naengcheon disaster recovery site in Ocheon-eup, Nam-gu, construction in high-risk areas such as densely populated sections and water-contact zones has been largely completed to prevent damage during the rainy season and typhoons.

Excavation and removal of dredged soil to expand the river's cross-sectional flow are also underway. Out of a total of 650,000 cubic meters of soil, 500,000 cubic meters have already been processed, and the remaining 150,000 cubic meters are scheduled to be handled by the end of July.

At the Chilseongcheon disaster recovery site, located in Daesong-myeon and Yeonil-eup, Nam-gu, three bridges are being reconstructed and 4.73 kilometers of river improvement work is ongoing. On the 30th of last month, Namseonggyo Bridge was fully opened to alleviate residents’ transportation inconveniences, while Chilseong 1-bo was rebuilt and Chilseong 3-bo was demolished to ensure smooth river flow.

Additionally, to secure the river’s cross-sectional flow and eliminate the risk of flooding, Pohang City carried out riverbed maintenance downstream of Namcheongyo Bridge in Chilseongcheon last August. This year, an additional 140 million KRW was invested to remove 70,000 cubic meters of sediment by the end of June.

Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, "When it comes to safety, thorough preparation in advance must always be the top priority," and added, "If even a minor risk is detected, we will respond swiftly and focus all administrative efforts to prevent inconvenience and safety accidents for citizens."
