Samsung Electronics CTO "AI Era Technology Intersection... Good Opportunity for Han Semiconductor"

Song Jaehyuk Samsung Electronics CTO Announcement
Semiconductor Challenges Deepen in AI Era
Innovation Needed to Create Opportunities

"To respond to various future artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, we are preparing multiple (semiconductor) technologies, and the intersection of these technologies is being formed. I believe there will be good opportunities for South Korea and Samsung Electronics, which possess DRAM, NAND, and logic technologies."

Song Jaehyuk, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Samsung Electronics, made this assessment on the 3rd at 'Nano Korea 2024' held at KINTEX in Ilsan. During his presentation themed 'Semiconductor Innovation for a Better Life,' Song CTO said, "There is considerable room for AI to develop further," expressing his determination to accelerate semiconductor innovation amid these changes.

Song CTO stated that various technologies are being developed in the semiconductor industry, and as these technologies converge in areas such as 3D and packaging, multiple opportunities are being created. Especially in South Korea, where both memory and system semiconductor industries have developed centered around Samsung Electronics, there is great potential to create opportunities in the AI era, according to Song CTO.

The semiconductor industry faces several challenges amid these changes. Song CTO explained, "The number and scope of technologies that powerful chip makers worldwide must handle are increasing and diversifying," adding, "Structural innovation is necessary, and optimization at the system level remains a difficult task." He also said, "Overturning the existing structure requires changing the entire development framework, which demands a tremendous budget," emphasizing, "Nevertheless, we must proceed." This means that such innovation is essential to respond to the AI era.

Song CTO identified three elements necessary for successful innovation. He said, "Developers must be able to think diversely, and people with diverse ideas should interact," adding, "Also, investment in the future must not be neglected." He explained that fundamental innovation cannot be achieved by building up suddenly or by the efforts of just a few genius engineers.

He stated, "(Those) companies, countries, or government agencies that effectively practice the value of such innovation will be able to seize the opportunity to govern AI technologies with tremendous potential in the future, as we do now." He also emphasized, "Looking at the AI semiconductor market, there is a tremendous market and opportunity," and "We must prepare extensively."

Meanwhile, after his presentation, Song CTO met with reporters at the event and regarding the ongoing HBM3E quality test said, "We are working hard," and "There will be good results." He gave the same response concerning the latest 1c DRAM mass production plan. When asked about the status of 3D DRAM development, he briefly replied, "We have to work hard."
