On the 3rd, the Cultural Heritage Administration decided to designate Goryeong-gun as a new historic capital at the Central Committee Meeting for the Preservation and Promotion of Historic Capitals held at the Government Complex Daejeon. A historic capital refers to an area with significant historical meaning. Since the enactment of the "Special Act on the Preservation and Promotion of Historic Capitals" in March 2004, four places have been designated: Gyeongju-si in Gyeongbuk, Buyeo-gun and Gongju-si in Chungnam, and Iksan-si in Jeonbuk.

This is the first new historic capital designation in about 20 years. Goryeong-gun will be able to receive support for projects improving residential environments and streetscape. Projects to create historical and cultural spaces utilizing major relics can also be promoted. A representative of the Central Committee for the Preservation and Promotion of Historic Capitals said, "The well-managed historical and cultural environment surrounding major heritage and the strong consensus among local residents influenced the designation."

The Goryeong area was the political and cultural center of Daegaya in the 5th to 6th centuries. Sites presumed to be palace grounds, mountain fortresses that defended the royal palace, waterway transportation relics, and pottery kiln traces have been confirmed.

In particular, the Goryeong Jisan-dong Tumuli Cluster, where hundreds of tombs are gathered, is considered a representative relic showing the status of Daegaya. It has long been recognized for its value and is managed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The gilt-bronze crown excavated from Tomb No. 32 (Goryeong Jisan-dong Tomb No. 32 gilt-bronze crown) also embodies Daegaya's craftsmanship and has been designated as a treasure.

The Cultural Heritage Administration plans to finalize the designation by revising the enforcement decree of the "Historic Capital Promotion Act." An official stated, "We will strive to efficiently preserve, manage, and promote the tangible and intangible heritage of the Goryeong-gun area and grow together with local residents."
