Chonnam National University Hospital Ranks First Nationwide for Three Consecutive Years in Brain-Dead Organ Donations

Meeting Held with Korea Organ Donation Agency

Jeonnam National University Hospital (Director Jeong Shin) has been surveyed as the hospital with the highest number of brain-dead organ donations nationwide for three consecutive years.


Jeonnam National University Hospital held a meeting to promote donation management with the Korea Organ and Tissue Donation Agency (Director Lee Sam-yeol) on the 1st.

The meeting was attended by hospital officials including Director Jeong Shin, Deputy Director Yoon Kyung-chul, and Organ Transplant Center Director Choi Su-jin-na, as well as Korea Organ and Tissue Donation Agency Director Lee Sam-yeol, Donation Management Headquarters Director Lee Jeong-rim, and Department of Laboratory Medicine Director Park Geum-bo-rae.


The Korea Organ and Tissue Donation Agency gave a presentation titled “Introduction to Jeonnam National University Hospital Donation Activation Program, Activities, and Best Practices.” As of July, Jeonnam National University Hospital reported 13 cases of brain-dead organ donations, the highest among 99 medical institutions capable of brain death determination and brain-dead organ donation.


Additionally, with 6 cases of human tissue donations, Jeonnam National University Hospital is recognized as the most active place for organ donation nationwide.


Jeonnam National University Hospital recorded ▲13 brain-dead organ donations and 9 human tissue donations in 2022, and ▲17 organ donations and 7 human tissue donations in 2023, maintaining the highest numbers nationwide for three consecutive years up to this year.


The activation of organ donation at Jeonnam National University Hospital is the result of introducing various programs after signing an agreement with the Korea Organ and Tissue Donation Agency.


Continuous communication and organ donation education and meetings are held regularly between medical staff and the donation agency. The program has been improved to allow medical staff to easily identify potential brain-dead donors. Various donation activation measures such as appointing life-sharing ambassadors, organ donation campaigns, workshops, and life-sharing announcement broadcasts are also being conducted.


Lee Sam-yeol, Director of the Korea Organ and Tissue Donation Agency, stated, “Jeonnam National University Hospital has established itself as the top institution nationwide for brain-dead donor discovery and management, becoming a pioneer in organ donation and transplantation. We thank the medical staff at Jeonnam National University Hospital who steadfastly support brain-dead donors despite difficult medical circumstances, and we will continue to cooperate as partners in donation.”


Director Jeong Shin of Jeonnam National University Hospital said, “I believe that with the active support of the Korea Organ and Tissue Donation Agency and the dedication of medical staff, we have become the number one brain-dead donor management institution nationwide. We will strive to further activate brain-dead organ donation through the promotion of organ donation and awareness improvement activities, as well as active cooperation with medical staff.”
