Secured 4.5 Billion Won in National and Provincial Funds, 4-Story Complex Cultural Facility to Be Established by 2027
Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) recently announced that it has secured approximately 4.5 billion KRW in national and provincial funds for the construction of a center within the Ocheon Industrial Complex, following its final selection in the ‘Youth Culture Center Construction Contest’ supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and hosted by the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation.
According to the city, the ‘Ocheon General Industrial Complex,’ established in 1983, is a general industrial complex representing Yeosu’s seafood processing industry. With an annual production value reaching approximately 136 billion KRW, it plays an important role in revitalizing the local economy; however, there have been no convenience or cultural facilities for workers.
Following this contest selection, Yeosu plans to invest a total project cost of approximately 5.7 billion KRW, including 4 billion KRW in national funds and over 500 million KRW in provincial funds, to build a ‘Youth Culture Center’ by 2027. This complex cultural facility will be conveniently accessible to workers in the Ocheon Industrial Complex and nearby residents.
The ‘Youth Culture Center’ will be a four-story building on a 1,519㎡ site, comprising a specialty product exhibition and sales hall, offices, a cafeteria, a gym, a health care room, and a multipurpose room.
As a result, tenant companies, workers, and local residents will be able to enjoy cultural welfare together, improving their quality of life. The creation of a space for youth is expected to transform the Ocheon General Industrial Complex into a ‘youth-friendly industrial complex.’
Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong stated, “A laborers’ complex cultural center is scheduled to be established in the Yeosu National Industrial Complex by 2025, but there had been many concerns about improving welfare for workers in the Ocheon Industrial Complex.” He added, “With the construction of this Youth Culture Center, we expect not only to strengthen worker welfare but also to create an industrial complex where young people want to visit, stay, and work, greatly contributing to the influx of young population.”
