Gyeonggi Province is calling for applications for the ‘Universal Design’ project sites aimed at vulnerable road users such as children, people with disabilities, and the elderly until August 14.
Universal Design refers to urban spaces or environmental designs that can be safely and conveniently used by everyone regardless of nationality, gender, age, or disability status.
Since last year, Gyeonggi Province has been promoting the ‘Universal Design Project for Vulnerable Road Users’ by selecting five sites annually across 31 cities and counties within the province.
Each selected site will receive 500 million KRW in project funding to improve facilities and spaces such as tourist attractions, parks, and sidewalks for vulnerable road users within the province.
The application targets include ▲traffic safety facilities and street spaces in areas densely populated by people with disabilities, the elderly, and children ▲public buildings requiring improvements in internal and external access, mobility safety, hygiene, and convenience facilities ▲parks and spaces for tourism, play, and sports facilities aimed at safety and convenience for vulnerable road users.
Applicant sites will be evaluated based on five criteria: commitment to implementation, suitability, necessity, sustainability, and effectiveness, to be finally selected as project sites.
Lee Eun-seon, Director of the Architectural Design Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "With social changes such as the increasing elderly population, the need for Universal Design to create an equal and safe environment is growing," adding, "We will actively expand Universal Design policies and projects to provide a better environment that can improve the quality of life for residents and continuously communicate with them."
