Nowon-gu Hosts Media Art Invitational Exhibition "Sum" by Artist Hong Nagyeom

Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will hold a media art invitational exhibition titled ‘Hong Nagyeom: Breath.’

The invited artist is media artist Hong Nagyeom, who has spent the past 10 years collecting sounds of daily life and nature and working with video and sound media.

Hong is especially famous as the opening artist of the 2023 Seoul Media Art Week exhibition held around COEX in Samseong-dong, with works such as ‘ONE’ and ‘W Symphony,’ which express the theme ‘Nature, humans, and digital?ultimately, we are all connected as one.’

The media art exhibition ‘Breath’ presents supernatural phenomena of nature invisible to the naked eye through videos created with the artist’s unique colors and touches. The works, symbolizing life’s ‘breathing’ by maximizing the physicality of nature, are composed of three chapters.

Through the media art ‘Breath,’ made of natural light and sound, the artist offers comfort to modern people living repetitive daily lives in the AI era.

In particular, through the most basic metabolic act of human survival, ‘breathing,’ the exhibition asks visitors whether we consciously breathe and regulate the minimum units of thought and emotion that we, living in this era, should enjoy, and encourages self-reflection.

The exhibition will be held at Sanggye Art Yard from July 2 to August 15. It is free of charge and operates on a reservation system per session to ensure ample space and safe, comfortable viewing. It is closed on Mondays and Sundays. Detailed viewing information and reservations can be found on the Nowon Cultural Foundation website.

Meanwhile, the district is striving to attract various exhibitions that resonate with residents. At the ‘Gyeongchun Line Forest Trail Gallery’ created in Hwarangdae Railroad Park, exhibitions such as ‘Junk Art: Stories of the Marginalized’ by artist Oh Dae-ho and ‘From Heart to Heart’ by elderly couple artists Lee Chan-jae & Ahn Kyung-ja were held, attracting about 18,000 visitors in the first half of the year.

Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “We have prepared a new media art genre exhibition to expand opportunities for residents to enjoy culture and arts,” adding, “We will continue to strive to satisfy residents’ cultural thirst through diverse cultural and artistic programs.”
