Former employees of a Seoul Metropolitan Government-affiliated public corporation have been handed over to the prosecution on charges of accepting bribes worth several hundred million won from suppliers.
According to the police on the 2nd, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Metropolitan Investigation Unit and Criminal Mobile Squad sent former employees Lee and Kim of the Seoul Water Reuse Facility Corporation (hereinafter referred to as the Corporation), an institution under the Seoul Metropolitan Government responsible for sewage treatment, to the prosecution last month without detention on charges of violating the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act by accepting money and valuables.
They, who were employees of the Corporation's Tancheon Water Reuse Center, are suspected of receiving money in exchange for using products from specific suppliers from 2017 to 2022.
They were investigated to have accepted bribes from companies producing chemicals necessary for sewage treatment, office supplies companies, and safety equipment companies.
The police believe Lee received over 200 million won and Kim about 100 million won in bribes from these companies, and preemptively seized approximately 250 million won before prosecution.
The police determined that the crimes were committed while they were employees of Tancheon Environment, a private consignment company operating the Tancheon Water Reuse Center before the Corporation was established. Employees of Tancheon Environment were transferred to the Corporation with employment succession in January 2021.
The police detected circumstances of money exchanges during the investigation of a separate case, initiated an investigation, and arrested them.
Upon discovering their misconduct, the Corporation dismissed Lee, who was the head of the Tancheon Water Reuse Center, in 2022. Kim, who served as the head of the General Affairs Department of the center, was also dismissed in April.
