What Were the Population, Housing, and Transportation Status in Seoul Last Year? Seoul Institute Announces Monitoring Results on the 4th

At the forum held in the Seoul Institute's main conference room, Da-mi Maeng, head of the Urban Space Research Office at the Seoul Institute, will present the 2023 monitoring results of the Seoul Basic Urban Plan. Notable keywords include ▲natural population decline (dead cross) ▲decrease in housing supply rate ▲uniformity of housing types ▲intensification of building aging ▲advancement of industrial structure ▲metropolitan expansion ▲polycentricity of central areas, among nine key points.

Based on the 2023 monitoring results, Research Director Maeng will introduce the main findings diagnosing changes in Seoul and the future performance and implementation direction of the 2040 Seoul Basic Urban Plan, which was finalized in January 2023.

The monitoring of the Basic Urban Plan is conducted regularly to understand the current status and changes in Seoul's population, housing, industry and economy, land use and urban maintenance, transportation, safety, and environment, with the purpose of reflecting these in the establishment of the urban basic plan. Seoul City established the first-ever nationwide monitoring system for the Basic Urban Plan in 2015 and revised the Seoul City Urban Planning Ordinance in October of the same year to create an institutional foundation for annually monitoring the implementation process of the urban basic plan. Since 2015, a total of eight monitoring sessions have been conducted.

The comprehensive discussion will include Nam-jin Nam, president of the Korean Urban Real Estate Society (professor at University of Seoul, chair), In-hee Kim, senior research fellow at the Seoul Institute, Ji-yeop Kim, professor at Sungkyunkwan University, Byung-hyun Yang, director of Seoul City Urban Planning Division, Jae-su Lee, professor at Kangwon National University, and Eun-seon Lim, senior research fellow at the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements, among other academic experts and practitioners.

Oh Gyun, president of the Seoul Institute, stated, "I hope that the results of the Seoul Basic Urban Plan monitoring conducted by the Seoul Institute will serve as an opportunity to enhance the execution capability of the 2040 Seoul Basic Urban Plan."
