President Yoon Suk-yeol met with former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on the 2nd and exchanged views on the global situation including the war in Ukraine, recent North Korea-Russia relations, and the situation on the Korean Peninsula, the Blue House announced.

President Yoon expressed his gratitude to former Secretary Rice for facilitating the Korea-Japan leaders' roundtable held at Stanford University in the United States during the APEC summit in San Francisco last November. Former Secretary Rice currently serves as the director of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.

President Yoon also praised former Secretary Rice for her efforts to strengthen the South Korea-U.S. alliance and resolve the North Korean nuclear issue during her tenure as U.S. National Security Advisor and Secretary of State, and asked her to continue working toward North Korea’s denuclearization and the improvement of North Korean human rights.

In response, former Secretary Rice said she has felt that the South Korea-U.S. alliance has become stronger than ever since President Yoon took office, and that she was deeply impressed by President Yoon’s determination and will to improve Korea-Japan relations at the Stanford roundtable last year.

The Blue House stated that former Secretary Rice, as a member of the U.S. academic community, has worked to broaden consensus within U.S. circles on the importance of the South Korea-U.S. relationship and said she will continue to spare no support for strengthening the South Korea-U.S. alliance.
