[Breaking] Prosecution: "Democratic Party's push to impeach prosecutors undermines judiciary and prosecutorial independence"

On the 2nd, the prosecution issued a statement strongly criticizing the Democratic Party of Korea's submission of a motion to impeach prosecutors.

On this day, the Supreme Prosecutors' Office released "The Supreme Prosecutors' Office's Position on the Democratic Party's Prosecutor Impeachment," stating, "Last year, the Democratic Party impeached three prosecutors, with one impeachment dismissed by the Constitutional Court. Today, they have again proposed the impeachment of four prosecutors over the ▲illegal remittance to North Korea case ▲Prime Minister Han Myeong-sook's violation of the Political Funds Act case ▲state corruption case ▲presidential election opinion manipulation case," adding, "These impeachment reasons have already been confirmed to have no basis through the first trial ruling of Vice Governor Lee Hwa-young, the confirmed guilty verdict of Prime Minister Han Myeong-sook which could not be overturned even by the investigative directive issued by former Minister of Justice Park Beom-gye, court hearings and rulings such as the issuance of arrest warrants for Kim Man-bae and Shin Hak-rim, as well as inspections, investigations, and objective evidence."

The Supreme Prosecutors' Office stated, "Although the stated reasons for impeachment differ on the surface, they all target prosecutors involved in investigations and trials related to Lee Jae-myung, including the illegal remittance to North Korea case, the Daejang-dong, Baekhyeon-dong, and Wirye development corruption cases, and the perjury coaching case. The Democratic Party has openly declared its intention to summon the prosecutors and related parties to the National Assembly for investigation," and added, "This impeachment drive is nothing other than moving the courtroom to the National Assembly, where the defendant currently on trial, the defense counsel who is a Democratic Party member, and the Democratic Party itself act as the judge, and the National Assembly assumes the role of the judiciary to conduct the trial."

Furthermore, the Supreme Prosecutors' Office emphasized, "This goes beyond judicial obstruction by suspending prosecutors' duties through impeachment motions, thereby complicating investigations and trials against Lee Jae-myung. It is an act of the National Assembly usurping the functions and roles of the judiciary, which directly contradicts the constitutional separation of powers and the rule of law that 'judicial power belongs to courts composed of judges.' It completely undermines the independence of the judiciary and the prosecution."
