Prepared to Protect Fishery Resources and Increase Fishermen's Income
Uljin County in North Gyeongsang Province released juvenile flatfish at the Daenarichon-gye village fishery in Yeonji-ri, Uljin-eup at 5 p.m. on the 1st.
This release was organized to protect the gradually depleting fishery resources and to increase the income of local fishermen. A total of 270,000 juvenile flatfish were purchased and released in the presence of local residents and others.
The flatfish released on this day are over 6 cm in length and are expected to grow into adults measuring 60 to 80 cm or more after one year, thereby contributing to the increase in fishermen's income.
Flatfish, which inhabit the seabed at depths of 20 to 40 meters along the coast, spawn about 2,000 eggs at a time from March to June, and mainly feed on small creatures such as crustaceans, shellfish, anchovies, herring, and saury.
Uljin County plans to continue releasing juvenile flatfish to increase the depleting marine fishery resources and, in addition, to promote the release of high value-added quality fish seeds to boost the income of village fisheries and fishermen.
County Governor Son Byeongbok said, "I hope that this release of juvenile flatfish will serve as an opportunity to increase marine fishery resources and the income of fishermen," adding, "We also expect it to bring joy to anglers and help create a vibrant fishing village."
