Intensive Management of Flood-Prone Areas in Preparation for Heavy Rainfall
Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam has completed a comprehensive inspection, cleaning, and dredging of approximately 150,000 stormwater inlets in the city through public-private cooperation to prevent flooding caused by heavy rainfall.
In particular, the city is implementing intensive management of areas at risk of flooding as the monsoon season begins in earnest.
Since February, the city has carried out maintenance and inspection of all stormwater inlets in the area through public-private cooperation. Local personnel, community leaders, and local organizations regularly check the cleanliness of stormwater inlets in their neighborhoods and report any issues to the responsible departments for prompt action, operating a stormwater inlet responsibility management system.
Additionally, in March and May, two citywide stormwater inlet cleaning campaigns were held with citizens. Relevant departments such as local offices, roads, parks, and environmental divisions also conducted frequent inspections and cleaning, completing maintenance of about 150,000 stormwater inlets in the city.
As the rainy season approaches, for more effective citizen safety, 60 areas with a history of flooding and 179 areas at risk of flooding, totaling 239 locations, have been designated as intensive management zones. A total of 2,324 monitoring agents have been assigned throughout all local offices, and the responsibility management system for stormwater inlets continues to be operated.
Private monitoring agents and local office staff regularly inspect stormwater inlets in flood-prone areas. Guidebooks containing maps, on-site photos, and details of the responsibility management system for key stormwater inlet management areas have been distributed to relevant departments and local administrative welfare centers.
Deputy Mayor Jang Geumyong said, "Although we have completed comprehensive maintenance of the city's stormwater inlets, various types of waste can continue to accumulate over time, so we will continue with ongoing maintenance." He added, "We will work to raise awareness about stormwater inlets and encourage more citizens to participate in making Changwon Special City cleaner and safer."
