Flood Relief Measures Around Gangnam Station Area

Jeon Seong-su, Seocho District Mayor, Conducts First On-Site Inspection of Flood Prevention Facilities in Third Year of Term Jeon Seong-su, Mayor of Seocho District, is inspecting the site of the newly constructed Sewoon-ro underground sewer. Provided by Seocho District.

Seocho-gu, Seoul announced on the 2nd that District Mayor Jeon Seong-su visited the construction site of the new sewer culvert on Seoun-ro to prevent flood damage in the low-lying flood-prone area around Gangnam Station on the 1st, and inspected disaster prevention facilities to prepare for summer typhoons and floods, taking steps to protect residents' safety.

On the day, Mayor Jeon, marking the 2nd anniversary of the launch of the 8th local government, went down to the site at a depth of 5 meters underground to receive a report on the progress of the construction from officials and thoroughly checked the flood prevention measures around Gangnam Station and the current status of flood preparedness. Afterwards, he visited the Seocho Pumping Station, examined the rainwater inflow routes and pumping equipment inside the station, confirmed the site where rainwater inflowed during heavy rain is drained into the nearby Banpo Stream, and encouraged the on-site workers.

This summer is expected to have more rainfall than usual, so Seocho-gu is making every effort to establish various flood prevention measures and disaster prevention infrastructure.

To resolve flooding in the habitual flood zone around Gangnam Station, the following measures have been implemented: dredging 2,400 sewer pipes and rainwater inlets; installing 160 continuous rainwater inlets; installing 3,300 manhole fall-prevention facilities; appointing dedicated managers for rainwater inlets around Gangnam Station; establishing traffic control plans and conducting joint drills for flood preparedness in the Gangnam Station area; and strengthening flood warning and alert systems.

Support is also being provided to build disaster prevention infrastructure divided by flood-prone areas. The capacity for rainwater storage was increased by 12,300 tons through the expansion of the Sadang IC detention basin, and the Isu-Gwacheon complex tunnel (with a storage capacity of 424,000 tons) has entered the design phase. Around Gangnam Station, the drainage system is being improved through the new sewer culvert construction on Seoun-ro, and as a mid- to long-term measure, a deep rainwater drainage tunnel (with a storage capacity of 455,000 tons) is also under design. In the Yangjae-dong area, design work is underway for the expansion and new construction of a rainwater pumping station, with construction scheduled for next year.

In addition, the district office operates a Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters that oversees the situation 24 hours a day to respond immediately to disaster situations.

Mayor Jeon Seong-su said, “We will regularly inspect flood-prone areas and drainage facilities and devote all efforts to preventing typhoons and floods through continuous establishment of disaster prevention infrastructure. We will do our best to protect the safety of residents and ensure they can spend the upcoming summer season with peace of mind.”
