KCC Urges Terrestrial Broadcasters to Avoid Overlapping Broadcasts of Paris Olympics to Ensure Viewing Rights

The KCC delivered the recommendation to the broadcasting rights holders for the Paris Olympics, Korea Broadcasting System (KBS), Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), and Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS), urging them to faithfully carry out the broadcasts to ensure the viewing rights of the public are maximally guaranteed.

This recommendation aims to prevent infringement on the viewing rights of citizens watching the Olympic broadcasts by having broadcasters schedule the broadcasts sequentially across channels and media.

However, exceptions to sequential scheduling will be recognized for events with high public interest, such as the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies and finals featuring the Korean national team. Additionally, the KCC recommended that broadcasters consult with each other in advance to ensure effective sequential scheduling.

The recommendation for sequential scheduling is based on the Broadcasting Act and was decided through consultations with the three terrestrial broadcasters and deliberations by the KCC's Universal Viewing Rights Protection Committee. The committee proposed the need for sequential scheduling by broadcasters to expand coverage of less popular events and to guarantee viewers' rights to watch a variety of competitions during the Paris Olympics broadcasts.
