HMM announced on the 2nd that it has installed the country's first 'Onboard Carbon Capture System (OCCS)' on a container ship and has begun demonstration trials.
The demonstration is being conducted on the 2200TEU-class container ship HMM Mongla. HMM plans to closely monitor the reduction of greenhouse gases during operation and the impact on the vessel.
OCCS is a greenhouse gas mitigation technology that captures carbon dioxide (CO₂) generated during ship operation, liquefies it for storage, and prevents its emission. It is highly likely to be recognized as a carbon reduction technology by international organizations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in the future. It is expected to become an effective means of reducing greenhouse gases from ships.

To develop this technology, HMM signed a business agreement last April with Samsung Heavy Industries, Korean Register, and domestic eco-friendly equipment specialist Panasia to begin OCCS demonstration research. An HMM official explained that this research is significant because it is being developed purely with domestic technology amid active global research on carbon capture technology.
HMM is promoting various activities to achieve '2050 Carbon Neutrality,' including ordering methanol-powered container ships, introducing biofuels for ships, and improving hull efficiency and navigation technologies. Successfully completing this OCCS demonstration will enable the acquisition of additional useful greenhouse gas reduction methods.
An HMM official stated, "Securing various technologies is essential to achieve carbon neutrality," adding, "We will contribute to strengthening eco-friendly competitiveness and technology development through diverse research and development in collaboration with domestic companies and institutions."
