"Reckless Car Flying onto Sidewalk"... Accident at Sicheong Station Captured on CCTV

Shockwave Motorcycle Bounced Away with Such Force

On the afternoon of the 1st, an accident occurred near the intersection by Seoul City Hall Station where a vehicle crashed onto the sidewalk, resulting in a total of 13 casualties. CCTV footage capturing the incident was released.


According to the CCTV footage of the accident released by 'JTBC' on the 2nd, pedestrians near the crosswalk at City Hall Station were walking as usual. Suddenly, the headlights of a car shone onto the sidewalk, and the vehicle abruptly rushed onto the sidewalk, hitting the pedestrians.


JTBC explained, "The vehicle almost flew onto the sidewalk," adding, "It hit a motorcycle parked on the sidewalk hard enough to send it flying."

According to the police and fire authorities, the accident occurred at around 9:27 p.m. the previous day on a one-way four-lane road. The driver of the Genesis vehicle, Mr. A (68), was driving in the wrong direction on the four-lane road, colliding with two vehicles in succession, and then struck pedestrians waiting at the sidewalk and crosswalk.


As the vehicle hit the citizens, a total of 9 people died, 1 was seriously injured, and 3 sustained minor injuries. Among the 9 deceased, 6 died at the scene, and 3 were transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest but were later pronounced dead. Of the 4 injured, 1 was seriously injured and 3 had minor injuries; all were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The seriously injured person’s life is not in danger. The 3 with minor injuries received treatment and were discharged.

The vehicle reportedly continued to move about 100 meters before stopping in front of Exit 12 of City Hall Station on the opposite side. The wrong-way driving distance was estimated to be about 200 meters.


Earlier, the fire authorities responded to a report stating "about 10 people have fallen" and arrived at the scene around 9:33 p.m. They then issued a Level 1 response, deploying 37 vehicles and 134 personnel to manage the accident site.


Currently, Mr. A claims the accident was caused by sudden unintended acceleration, and there is no indication of drunk driving. Whether drugs or alcohol were involved has not yet been confirmed. The police are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident based on witness statements and other evidence.
