Lunit Appoints Yuseongwon, Former Big Tech Executive, as New CTO

Medical AI company Lunit announced on the 2nd that it has appointed Dr. Yoo Sung-won as its Chief Technology Officer (CTO).

Newly appointed CTO Yoo Sung-won earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Seoul National University, followed by a master's degree in electrical and computer engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University. He also obtained a master's degree in medical informatics from Harvard Medical School, demonstrating expertise spanning both engineering and medicine.


CTO Yoo has over 10 years of experience in software development and management at global big tech companies such as Google and Intel. At Intel, he conducted research related to parallel computing, and at Google, he led projects optimizing the performance of cloud platforms and developing the Android operating system (OS) for Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Subsequently, at Verily Life Sciences, a healthcare subsidiary of Google Alphabet, he directed various healthcare-related software development projects. Through collaboration with the medical informatics research center under Stanford University School of Medicine, he also led AI-driven medical data analysis and modeling.


Lunit plans to further strengthen its medical AI technology capabilities with the appointment of CTO Yoo. To advance Lunit’s existing AI algorithms, CTO Yoo will accelerate the construction of a medical data platform and focus on securing additional top-tier engineering talent domestically and internationally, as well as systematically nurturing the organization based on his software development expertise and work experience.


CTO Yoo stated, "Lunit is recognized for applying world-class medical AI technology in real clinical settings and proving its value. I will accelerate platform technology innovation to lead the global medical AI market and devote myself to strengthening organizational capabilities." Lunit CEO Seo Beom-seok also said, "For Lunit to grow into a medical AI platform company in the future, recruiting professionals with interdisciplinary expertise is crucial. The addition of CTO Yoo Sung-won, who combines convergent expertise in engineering and medicine with experience gained at global big tech companies, will further boost product strength and global sales expansion."
