Average of 5 Senior Centers Visited Daily, Total of 242 Locations
Responsible Administration Connecting On-Site Communication to Systematic Follow-Up on Suggestions
Beyond Simple Facility Improvements and Supplies, Meaningful Discovery of Senior Leisure Support Policies
Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that starting July 1, marking the 3rd anniversary of the 8th elected administration, the mayor will visit senior centers in the district to communicate through a “People’s Livelihood Exploration” initiative.
The senior centers to be visited total 242 locations, which is practically a full survey excluding 3 centers currently not operating or excluded due to internal circumstances out of the 256 registered senior centers in the area. This is already the third time since the “Field Livelihood Exploration” was conducted in 2019, when 246 senior centers were visited and over 9,000 seniors were met.
Since then, the mayor has visited welfare facilities, schools, kindergartens, and daycare centers in the district on various occasions by theme, and issues raised on-site have been jointly reviewed and addressed by multiple related agencies, with guidance provided accordingly.
This has become a hallmark of Nowon-gu’s unique “field-centered communication administration.”
Through this meeting with seniors, the district plans to exchange opinions on leisure activities and environmental improvements for the elderly, while simultaneously conducting seasonal safety inspections of facilities.
Additionally, the effectiveness of support projects for senior centers will be reviewed, and future support projects will aim to enhance appropriateness, prevent overlapping benefits, and improve fairness.
On the first day of the 3rd anniversary of the 8th elected administration and the first day of the senior center livelihood exploration, Mayor Oh met residents at the Wolgye 1-dong Hyundai Senior Center, gauging community responses to senior support projects such as health walking programs and free shingles vaccinations. Kim Cheong-hee (79), the president of the senior center who discussed changes in the Wolgye-dong area, expressed, “I am grateful that the requests made during the last visit were well addressed, and I am pleased that you have come again.”
Meanwhile, following the 2019 visits to senior centers, 1,258 resident suggestions were meticulously recorded, and through reviews by relevant departments and consultations with related agencies, 506 cases were resolved, building trust with residents. Even if residents’ suggestions or inconveniences were not immediately resolved, continuous livelihood reporting meetings chaired by the mayor with related department heads ensured management until completion, with transparent communication of results to residents.
Last year, through the senior center environment improvement support project, supplies were provided to 158 senior centers, and facility improvements such as wallpapering and flooring were supported at 107 centers.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, stated, “With seniors aged 65 and over accounting for 19.8% of Nowon-gu’s population, the importance of facilities and policies supporting healthy leisure activities for the elderly is emphasized. We will continue to visit and listen to seniors whenever possible to firmly support their daily lives.”
