Gyeonggi Province has identified 456 high-value delinquent taxpayers who operated luxury imported cars through leasing to conceal their assets.
According to the investigation by Gyeonggi Province, these individuals owed taxes ranging from 10 million won to several hundred million won, yet they were confirmed to have been driving high-end passenger cars such as Porsche and Mercedes-Maybach while paying several million won monthly.
In one case, individual business owner Mr. A had been delinquent on local income tax and other taxes amounting to 330 million won since 2022, but Gyeonggi Province's tracking investigation revealed that he was driving a Porsche worth over 600 million won through a lease. The province seized Mr. A's lease deposit of 100 million won held by the leasing company.
Construction business owner Mr. B had been delinquent on property tax and other taxes amounting to 105 million won since 2020, but the investigation showed he was driving a Mercedes-Maybach worth over 400 million won through a lease. Accordingly, Gyeonggi Province seized a lease deposit of 80 million won.
No Seung-ho, Director of the Tax Justice Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Intelligent delinquents are exploiting the fact that when luxury imported cars are operated through leasing, the owner is registered as the leasing finance company, making it impossible to seize the vehicle even if taxes are delinquent." He emphasized, "If voluntary payment is not made, we will sequentially collect the deposits to cover the delinquent taxes, and in the case of luxury lifestyle offenders, we will conduct home searches and seize movable property simultaneously. If illegal activities are discovered, additional criminal charges will be pursued."
