Seongdong-gu Installs 'Smart Safe Right-Turn Facility'... Seongsu Station Exit 3 Nationwide First

Seongdong-gu Installs 'Smart Safe Right-Turn Facility'... Seongsu Station Exit 3 Nationwide First

Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jung Won-oh) announced that it will install the nation’s first “Seongdong-type Smart Safe Right-Turn Facility,” which displays moving pictograms to prevent traffic accidents between vehicles and pedestrians.

Seongdong-gu plans to pilot the installation of the “Seongdong-type Smart Safe Right-Turn Facility” in July at the right-turn point from Seongsu-ro to Achasan-ro, across from Exit 3 of Seongsu Station. The area around Seongsu Station, where the facility will be installed, is known to be very congested due to an increase in visitors.

In particular, the area across from Exit 3 of Seongsu Station is an aboveground section of Subway Line 2 with a station viaduct, making it difficult to secure visibility between right-turning vehicles and vehicles going straight, increasing the likelihood of accidents. There have also been complaints about the high risk of collisions between right-turning vehicles and pedestrians at the crosswalk, making safety measures urgent.

Typically, options such as installing right-turn-only traffic lights, safety signs, or LED display facilities linked to pedestrian signals could be considered, but these had limitations due to low visibility.

Accordingly, Seongdong-gu began introducing smart facilities that compensate for these shortcomings and enhance intuitiveness. Based on the know-how and experience from installing the Seongdong-type Smart Crosswalk, which incorporated IoT advanced technologies such as spotlighting, pedestrian detection sensors, and voice guidance functions, the district repeatedly reviewed and discussed the idea of using pictograms that anyone can easily recognize.

As a result, the decision was made to introduce the nation’s first “Seongdong-type Smart Safe Right-Turn Facility.” This facility operates by using artificial intelligence (AI) cameras to detect vehicles, pedestrians, and others in real time, displaying moving pictograms on monitors according to the situation, which is expected to more efficiently prevent traffic accidents.

After the pilot installation, Seongdong-gu plans to conduct post-monitoring on the number of traffic accidents and user satisfaction.

Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “With the revision of the Road Traffic Act strengthening the obligation for vehicle drivers to slow down or stop temporarily and protect pedestrians when making right turns, we are making every effort to minimize the risk of traffic accidents. We will continue to expand facilities to ensure the traffic safety of Seongdong residents.”
