On the 1st, the UK Daily Mail reported that actress A, who is currently taking Ozempic, spent a night at Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow's house and was unable to hold her bowel movement, resulting in an accident on the bed. Since then, 'diarrhea caused by Ozempic' has been widely covered by the US media, drawing attention to the side effects of obesity treatments.
Ozempic was originally developed as a diabetes treatment drug and contains 'semaglutide' as its main ingredient, which is known to lower blood sugar levels and regulate appetite, making it also used as an obesity treatment. This drug is known to suppress appetite by mimicking the hormone that sends signals to the brain indicating fullness. It is especially convenient because it is administered only once a week, and its weight loss effect is so significant that it has been called a 'miracle obesity treatment.'
However, side effects can occur as the body mistakenly thinks the stomach has consumed a large amount of food and sends instructions to empty the contents into the intestines. This confusion in the body's signaling system can cause uncontrollable 'explosive diarrhea.' Patients taking Wegovy, which contains semaglutide and has a similar composition to Ozempic, also experience diarrhea as a side effect. According to clinical trials, one out of ten patients taking Ozempic or Wegovy experienced diarrhea.
On the US social networking service (SNS) 'Reddit,' many posts have been made complaining about diarrhea side effects after taking obesity treatments. One user shared, "About 15 minutes after starting to drive to a fancy dinner on my birthday, I ended up soiling my pants," adding, "My birthday was ruined." Another user, who said they were 43 years old and had taken Wegovy, confessed, "I was so embarrassed when I realized I had become an adult who soils their pants."
Meanwhile, Wegovy caused a worldwide sensation after Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, reportedly lost about 13 kg in about a year, showing its effectiveness. In April last year, the Korea Food and Drug Administration approved the sale of Wegovy, but the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk is delaying its launch in the Korean market due to supply shortages and other reasons.
