Minister of Health and Welfare Cho Kyu-hong Faces Risk of Accusation Over Decision to Increase Medical School Quotas by '2000' Students

Attorney Lee Byung-chul of the law firm Chanjong and the National Emergency Committee of Medical School Professors announced on the 1st that they plan to report Minister Cho to the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials on charges of 'abuse of authority and obstruction of the exercise of rights.' They claim that Minister Cho's decision infringed on the president's authority. Minister Cho had stated that he made the decision on the size of the medical school quota unilaterally.

Attorney Lee said, "Minister Cho made a unilateral decision on the most critical and important matter of increasing the quota by 2000 students annually without prior reporting or obtaining prior approval from the president," adding, "This is an illegal and unjust exercise of authority." He added, "President Yoon Seok-yeol should be outraged as his rights to prior approval, authorization, and consent were violated," and said, "If Minister Cho did not make the decision, the Corruption Investigation Office must identify who the unknown person responsible is during the investigation process."
