Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital Seeks Early Lung Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Using AI

Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital (Director Min Jeong-jun) is embarking on a study to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) for early diagnosis of lung cancer and finding appropriate treatment methods.

Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital recently announced on the 1st that it was selected for the 2024 AI Voucher Support Project organized by the Korea Information and Communication Industry Promotion Association with the theme of "Efficiency Improvement and Performance Verification of Lung Cancer Diagnosis Using Artificial Intelligence."

The AI Voucher Support Project provides vouchers to companies that need to apply AI solutions to promote digital transformation. In this project, Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital participates as the demand company, and Coreline Soft Co., Ltd. participates as the supply company.

Professor Jeong Won-gi of the Radiology Department at Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital is the overall project leader, with Professor Kang Se-ryeong of the Nuclear Medicine Department, Professor Kim Yong-hyeop of the Radiation Oncology Department, and Professors Oh Hyung-joo and Park Hwa-gyeong of the Pulmonology Department participating as co-researchers.

The research team plans to invest 319 million KRW by November this year to carry out ▲ efficiency improvement of lung cancer diagnosis by introducing AI solutions to assist chest CT image diagnosis ▲ performance verification and effectiveness evaluation of AI solutions in actual hospital diagnostic environments ▲ establishment of a research system for AI solution utilization.

Lung cancer, which ranks first in cancer mortality, is difficult to diagnose early due to the lack of clear initial symptoms. Accordingly, the research team will conduct a study using the world’s first domestically developed AI solution ‘AVIEW Chest,’ capable of detecting lung cancer screening, micro-nodules, and masses all at once, for actual hospital lung cancer screening and outpatient diagnosis.

Professor Jeong Won-gi said, “Early diagnosis of lung cancer in clinical settings is very important, and introducing AI solutions for lung cancer diagnosis will enable faster and more accurate results.”

Meanwhile, this project was selected as an excellent case of the 2024 AI Voucher Support Project, and its contents will be presented at the Matching Day event held at the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center Convention Hall on the 17th, hosted by the Korea Information and Communication Industry Promotion Association in Gwangju.
