Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok Strengthens Commitment to Developing a Global Secondary Battery Industry Hub

Visit to Gwangyang POSCO Future M... On-site Meeting Held

Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, reaffirmed his commitment to fostering the region as a global hub for the secondary battery industry.


On the 1st, according to Jeonnam Province, Governor Kim visited POSCO Future M, a leading secondary battery company in Gwangyang, toured the production facilities, and held an on-site meeting.

Jeong In-hwa, Mayor of Gwangyang; Eom Ki-cheon, Vice President of POSCO Future M; Lee Kyung-seop, CEO of POSCO Philbar Lithium Solution; Park Hee-seok, CEO of POSCO Lithium Solution; Lim Ji-woo, CEO of POSCO HY Clean Metal; Choi Jong-gyun, Head of Management Planning at SNNC; and Kang Seok-ki, Head of Research Support at the Korea Battery Industry Association, attended together.


POSCO Group companies related to secondary batteries, including POSCO Future M, are concentrated around Gwangyang Port, the largest import-export hub in Korea, as well as Yulchon 1 Industrial Complex, Sepung Industrial Complex, and Gwangyang National Industrial Complex.


To date, they have invested 4 trillion KRW in secondary batteries and plan to invest an additional 4 trillion KRW, totaling an investment scale of 8 trillion KRW.


The province designated 1.55 million square meters (470,000 pyeong) of the Gwangyang Bay area, where the secondary battery ecosystem has been established, as an Opportunity Development Zone on the 25th of last month. It also plans to develop the area as a national advanced strategic industry specialized complex to serve as a base for domestic production of global material industries.


Governor Kim Young-rok said, “I hope that the designation of the Opportunity Development Zone and POSCO Group’s investment in Jeonnam will transform the secondary battery industry into a regional growth strategic industry, and I expect POSCO’s investment plans in Jeonnam for secondary batteries, hydrogen, and other sectors to proceed smoothly.”


He added, “Learning from the battery fire accident in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, which caused numerous casualties, please do your best in workplace safety management and accident prevention. We will also actively strive for the designation of the national advanced strategic industry specialized complex to create a secondary battery material industry ecosystem.”


In response, Vice President Eom Ki-cheon said, “We appreciate the support from Jeonnam Province. We will actively cooperate in fostering Jeonnam’s future advanced strategic industries and do our best to strengthen safety management.”


Meanwhile, Jeonnam Province is addressing the shortage of industrial land by developing the Sepung Industrial Complex and Yulchon 2 Industrial Complex, and is also expediting the designation of a future advanced materials national industrial complex covering 3.96 million square meters (1.2 million pyeong).
