Seogu District in Gwangju Metropolitan City (headed by Mayor Kim Ikang) won the grand prize in the Korean Medicine Health Care Project Excellence Case Contest hosted by the National Institute for Korean Medicine Development.
According to Seogu District on July 1, this contest was held to discover outstanding cases of community health and welfare improvement centered on Korean medicine and to share and spread these cases to local governments across the country.

Since the launch of the integrated care pilot project in 2019, Seogu District has been collaborating with the Seogu Korean Medicine Association to provide home visit Korean medicine services to elderly residents who have difficulty visiting clinics.
After consultations, the district also supports Korean medicine treatments such as acupuncture, cupping, moxibustion, and taping, based on assessments of key symptoms and musculoskeletal pain and function.
To date, more than 20 Korean medicine doctors in the district have participated, providing home visit Korean medicine services to over 500 care recipients. Evaluations of these patients showed improvements in mobility limitations (upper and lower limbs), pain intensity (shoulder, hip, knee, waist), and quality of life compared to initial visits. Satisfaction surveys also recorded high scores.
In recognition of these achievements, Seogu District received the grand prize at the Korean Medicine Health Care Project Performance Conference held at the Seoul Royal Hotel on June 28. The district presented its best practices in front of more than 100 participants, including officials from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the National Institute for Korean Medicine Development, local governments nationwide, and related organizations.
Kim Ikang, Mayor of Seogu District, stated, “To prepare for the nationwide expansion of integrated care in 2026, Seogu District will join forces with the Seogu Korean Medicine Association to become a national leader. We will continue to do our utmost to ensure that elderly residents in need of care can enjoy a dignified old age in their familiar surroundings.”
