Professor Jeong Sanghee's Research Team at Hoseo University Establishes International Standards for Veterinary Pharmaceuticals

Final Standards to Be Proposed at the 27th Session of the Codex Committee on Food Hygiene This October

According to the research team led by Professor Jeong Sang-hee at Hoseo University, international human safety standards and food regulations for veterinary drugs have been established.

Hoseo University announced that an international human safety standard and food specification for veterinary drugs have been established through the research of Professor Jeong Sang-hee's team.

The research team led by Professor Jeong Sang-hee from the Department of Clinical Pathology and the Bio Medical Science Research Center conducted a study titled "Reevaluation of the Safety of Veterinary Drugs for Livestock and Aquatic Animals," a project aimed at advancing food safety management standards by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. The results were submitted to JECFA, the expert committee on food safety evaluation under the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), leading to the establishment of international human safety standards and food specifications based on this research.

The submitted research results to JECFA include evaluations of acute toxicity, 90-day repeated dose toxicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity, genotoxicity, effects on normal human gut microbiota, residue and metabolic distribution in target animals, and human risk assessment for the drugs Fumagillin and Clopidol, which are used domestically and internationally to treat protozoal diseases in livestock, honeybees, and aquatic animals.

Based on these research results, at the 99th JECFA meeting held last February, international safety standards such as the acceptable daily intake, acute reference dose for Fumagillin and Clopidol, and maximum residue limits for Fumagillin in honey and fish products and Clopidol in poultry products were established. These will be proposed as final standards at the 27th Codex Committee on Residues of Veterinary Drugs in Foods (CODEX CCRVDF) scheduled for October.

Professor Jeong Sang-hee stated, "This is the first case where research results from South Korea were fully utilized in setting international standards, signifying that the excellence of domestic safety and risk assessment has been recognized by JECFA, the world's leading international expert organization."
