Gyeonggi Province is significantly expanding heat relief shelters to prevent heat-related illnesses among 'mobile workers' during the peak summer heat.
Mobile workers refer to laborers affiliated with platforms such as delivery workers, substitute drivers, courier workers, and private tutoring teachers. Due to the nature of their frequently moving work, their rest times are irregular and there are no designated rest areas, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses during the summer.
Accordingly, Gyeonggi Province plans to operate rest shelters not only at the existing 21 mobile worker shelters in 17 cities and counties but also at 61 direct agencies and public institutions under the province.
Additionally, the province will cooperate with cities and counties to allow mobile workers to use public heat relief shelters for vulnerable groups in all 31 cities and counties within the province. The locations of heat relief shelters in each city and county can be found on the Gyeonggi Labor Rights Center website (https://labor.gg.go.kr/).
Jo Sang-gi, Director of Labor Rights at Gyeonggi Province, stated, "We hope these shelters will help mobile workers who work outdoors to endure the heat during the heatwave, even if only a little." He added, "We will continue to develop policies to guarantee the right to rest for mobile workers and tirelessly strive to improve the harsh working conditions of mobile workers."
