Handonghun: "The Ones I Must Not Betray Are the Republic of Korea and Its People"

Han Dong-hoon, a candidate in the People Power Party leadership race, said on the 28th, "I will never betray the Republic of Korea or its people," adding, "The ones I must not betray are the Republic of Korea and its people."

On the same day, after paying respects at the Busan UN Memorial Park, Han made these remarks in response to reporters' comments that candidates Won Hee-ryong and Yoon Sang-hyun's statement that "politics of betrayal will not succeed" seemed to be aimed at former Chairman Han.

Han asked, "Is the party-government relationship the goal of politics or the ultimate goal of politics?" and answered, "It is a means and a process for good politics and politics for the people." He continued, "I believe that process should involve cooperation and checks and balances, thorough discussions on each issue, and finding the right answers for the people and the Republic of Korea on each matter," adding, "That is why I mentioned the rational reform of the party-government relationship."

Regarding speculation that former President Donald Trump might raise the issue of defense cost-sharing if he is re-elected, former Chairman Han said, "We need to find policies in the national interest, but in the case of the United States, it is a significant variable for all countries including us," and added, "I will closely monitor the situation at that time and pursue politics that serve the Republic of Korea and its people."
