Seongnaecheon Water Playground Opens Wide... Targeting Children's Innocence

In step with the early arrival of the heatwave, Songpa-gu (Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced on the 28th the opening of the ‘Seongnaecheon Water Playground’ and the start of its operation until the end of August.

The Seongnaecheon Water Playground (141 Ogeum-dong) is a representative local water play spot with a total length of 158 meters and a water depth of 0.3 to 0.8 meters, opened in 2004. It has gained popularity through word of mouth for its shallow depth where children can safely enjoy water play and its cool, clean underground spring water, attracting more than 60,000 visitors annually.

Especially this year, to offer children a different and distinctive fun experience compared to last year, new attractions such as a mini garden and a large rubber duck have been added in the urban area.

First, a mini garden was created in a leftover space, allowing visitors to enjoy water play surrounded by nature. Childlike landscaping elements such as flowerpots shaped like bird nests with plants were installed throughout the water playground, which is otherwise dominated by gray concrete, adding a waterside ambiance.

Also, a large rubber duck measuring 2.5 meters in height and 2 meters in width welcomes visitors in the water basin. Landscape lighting has been installed so that the cute duck can be seen even at night.

A district official said, “We installed the duck hoping it will attract many visitors like the giant rubber duck at Seokchon Lake two years ago,” and added, “We will also do our best to prevent safety accidents such as boarding prevention.”

In addition, the district installed play facilities such as water slides and trick art zones to enhance the fun of water play, and fully equipped auxiliary facilities including shade tents, Mongolian tents, changing rooms, showers, and portable toilets to ensure convenience. Safety will also be thoroughly managed with full inspections of facilities and the constant deployment of safety personnel.

Meanwhile, about 200 children from seven nearby daycare centers were invited to the opening ceremony held on the 28th. After watching spectacular performances such as magic and juggling, the children will mark the start of summer with refreshing water play. At a separately prepared experience booth, visitors can enjoy various activities ranging from exciting games like yoyos and spinning tops to emergency first aid education and safety experience classes useful in emergencies.

The water playground, operating until August 31, is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. It is free for everyone regardless of age or gender, but infants and toddlers must be accompanied by a guardian. Since there is no separate parking facility, public transportation is convenient to use. For more detailed information, inquiries can be made to the operating body, Songpa-gu Facilities Management Corporation.

Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, said, “With record-breaking heat expected this summer, I hope everyone can comfortably cool off at this urban water playground without having to go far,” and added, “We will do our best to operate the Seongnaecheon Water Playground, which has become a family-friendly water play spot, as safely as possible.”
