JCS: "Balloon Payload Weight 10kg... Risk of Sudden Dive"
On the night of the 26th, North Korea released about 180 balloons carrying waste toward the south, with around 70 of them falling in northern Gyeonggi and Seoul. This marks the third consecutive day of releasing waste balloons since the night of the 24th. It is the seventh release in a month.
According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff on the 27th, most of the contents of the waste balloons were paper scraps, and there were no harmful substances. However, the payload weight of the balloons reached up to 10 kg, which could be dangerous during a rapid descent.
The military responded on the 9th, when North Korea was continuously releasing waste balloons, by broadcasting anti-North Korean messages using some fixed loudspeakers in the border area, but they have not operated them since then.
A Joint Chiefs of Staff official said, "We are ready to immediately implement psychological warfare broadcasts against the North," adding, "We will flexibly carry them out depending on strategic and operational situations, and it depends on North Korea's actions."
