Lotte Chilsung, '2030 Plastic Reduction Roadmap'... "Packaging Weight Down, Recycled Material Use Up"

Goal to Reduce New Plastic Usage by 20% by 2030

Lotte Chilsung Beverage announced on the 27th that it has established the '2030 Plastic Reduction Roadmap' to practice ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) management and promote a circular economy.

Lotte Chilsung, '2030 Plastic Reduction Roadmap'... "Packaging Weight Down, Recycled Material Use Up"

This roadmap is being promoted to enhance environmental sustainability through active resource saving and recycling, with the core goal of reducing the use of new plastic made from petroleum-derived raw materials by 20% compared to 2023 by 2030. To materialize and implement this, Lotte Chilsung has set two detailed strategies: 'lightweighting plastic containers' and 'expanding the use of recycled raw materials.'

Lightweighting plastic containers aims to reduce the weight of plastic while maintaining quality and safety by improving container shapes and lowering the height of PET bottle caps, including developing optimized designs and reducing the weight of preforms, the material stage before PET bottles are formed. Additionally, new technologies such as nitrogen gas charging and facility investments are being prepared.

Lotte Chilsung plans to expand the proportion of recycled raw materials to 30% by 2030. Specifically, it will sequentially apply and gradually increase the recycling rate of various products using physical recycling (MR-PET), which involves sorting, washing, drying, and melting recyclable waste plastics, and chemical recycling (CR-PET), which chemically decomposes waste plastics into pure raw materials for reuse. Furthermore, the polyethylene (PE) film mixed with 20% recycled raw materials currently applied to the external packaging of 'Isis Eco' will be expanded to all products by 2030.

A Lotte Chilsung official stated, "We will carefully examine the environmental aspects from material procurement to disposal stages of packaging, as well as quality and consumer health aspects during product consumption, and will faithfully implement the plastic reduction roadmap by 2030."
