Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) will open a temporary public parking lot with 220 spaces on an 8,626㎡ site at 231-30 Hangangno 1-ga as early as the end of this year.

On the 25th, Yongsan-gu held a 'Resident Briefing Session on the Creation of a Temporary Public Parking Lot on the KEPCO Site in Samgakji' at the auditorium of Hangangno-dong Community Center, explaining the background, current progress, and future plans of the project, the district announced on the 27th.

The area around 231-30 Hangangno 1-ga is located in front of Samgakji Station and near Yongridan-gil, a popular area visited by many people. Recently, it has become a hotspot among the MZ generation, causing serious parking issues for visiting vehicles. The area is densely populated with multi-family houses and commercial buildings, making the parking environment poor for residents, and resolving the parking shortage is urgent.

To address this issue, the district has been working since the end of last year to transform the idle land owned by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) into a parking lot needed by residents. In February, an agreement was signed with KEPCO, the landowner, to create the temporary public parking lot.

The district recently applied for a special adjustment grant from Seoul City to minimize the use of the district budget for the project and secured 1.9 billion KRW, which is 97% of the total project budget. Construction is scheduled to be commissioned next month, with the goal of opening by the end of the year.

Before the briefing session, Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, visited the project site and requested that the construction focus on creating a layout that is easy for residents and visitors to use, providing essential convenience facilities, and ensuring a safe parking lot. He also emphasized minimizing the inconvenience caused to residents by noise and dust during construction.

The responsible department is designing the parking lot by separating resident parking zones and public parking zones to prevent discomfort between residents and visitors, and is reviewing the locations of entrances and exits to ensure smooth vehicle traffic.

Mayor Park said, “This temporary public parking lot feels like an oasis that resolves the chronic parking shortage for residents of Hangangno-dong,” adding, “We will strive to secure public parking lots through various methods such as creating parking lots on leftover land and opening affiliated parking lots to address the shortage of parking spaces in the area.”
