Japan's Average IQ Is 12 Points Higher Compared to the World Average
A survey result showing that Japan has the highest intelligence quotient (IQ) in the world has attracted attention.
Finnish intelligence testing organization 'Wiqtcom' announced on the 25th (local time) the '2024 Ranking of the Most Intelligent Countries in the World,' which contains IQ test results from 109 countries.
In the list, Japan ranked first with an average IQ of 112.30, about 12 points higher than the global average IQ of 99.64. It was followed by Hungary (111.28), Taiwan (111.20), and Italy (110.82). South Korea ranked 5th with 110.80. Among major developed countries, Germany (105.23) was 23rd, the United Kingdom (97.63) was 66th, and the United States (96.57) was 77th.
The lowest rank, 109th, was Mozambique, with an average IQ of 90.06, which is 9.58 points lower than the global average.
This is not the only report where Japan received the highest IQ score. In the 2016 report 'The Intelligence of Nations' published by the Ulster Institute in the UK, Japan recorded an average IQ of 106.48, ranking first in the world. In that report, South Korea scored 102.35, ranking 6th.
According to Wiqtcom, IQ is an indicator used to estimate a person's general intelligence. On average, human IQ is close to 100, and 95% of humans fall between 70 and 130. In other words, only 5% of the total population has an IQ below 70 or above 130.
Generally, an IQ between 90 and 109 is classified as 'average/normal,' and an IQ above 119 is considered to indicate very high intelligence. Conversely, an IQ below 80 is classified as borderline intellectual disability.
However, Wiqtcom explains that IQ is only a relative indicator of intelligence. For example, a person with an IQ of 132 is presumed to have higher intelligence than 98% of humans, but IQ alone cannot measure a person's intellectual ability. It has no relation to absolute measures with correct answers, such as logical reasoning ability or problem-solving skills.
