Gwangyang City Launches Full-Scale Response to Summer Disaster Preparedness

Disaster Preparedness Inspection Meeting Held to Conduct On-Site Checks and Devise Countermeasures

On the 25th, Gwangyang City in Jeollanam-do announced that it held a 'Summer Disaster Preparedness Inspection Meeting' at the city hall situation room, chaired by Vice Mayor Kim Ki-hong, to check the progress of each department and establish high-level countermeasures, thereby preparing a full-scale response posture.

At the meeting, considering that typhoons, floods, and heatwaves caused by abnormal weather this summer are expected to occur strongly and frequently, detailed inspections of sector-specific measures were conducted under the assumption of extreme situations to achieve zero casualties and minimize property damage.

Additionally, interdepartmental collaboration matters were specifically discussed and future plans were shared.

In particular, Vice Mayor Kim Ki-hong emphasized on-site inspections and countermeasures for areas vulnerable to casualties such as steep slopes, landslide-prone areas, semi-basement houses, reservoirs, and underground spaces of apartment complexes, focusing on resident evacuation plans and facilities closely related to citizens' lives such as road rainwater drains, farmland flooding, and drainage pump stations.

He also instructed that preemptive control measures be implemented in areas expected to be damaged by river flooding, such as riverside parking lots, lowlands, and Sewolgyo Bridge, and that village broadcasts and disaster alert text messages be sent out to guide residents to prepare in advance.

The city has previously conducted activities to ensure thorough disaster prevention, including ▲inspection meetings on preemptive measures for summer typhoons and floods ▲inspection of disaster early warning facilities ▲inspection of temporary housing for disaster victims and disaster relief supplies ▲maintenance of cooling shelters and support for air conditioning devices ▲and promotion activities on citizen action guidelines for summer disaster preparedness.

Vice Mayor Kim Ki-hong of Gwangyang City said, “As heavy rain and intense heat are forecasted again this year following last year, we must thoroughly prepare in advance by mobilizing all administrative capabilities,” and added, “We ask all citizens to actively cooperate by refraining from outdoor activities and avoiding dangerous areas when weather warnings are issued or controls are in place.”
