Digital Block Augmented Reality Enhances Safety and Work Efficiency
Pilot Application of Augmented Reality Virtual Environment in Vehicle Maintenance and Training
Busan Transportation Corporation held a demonstration event on the 25th in collaboration with the Korea Railroad Research Institute to develop and pilot operate a 'Digital Block Augmented Reality (AR)' system for railway vehicle maintenance and training.
The corporation and the research institute are currently conducting various joint studies to develop digital transformation technologies for the railway industry.
Since 2021, they have been developing the 'Platform for Railway Digital Engineering and Digital Block (TROSAR Platform, TRain Open Software ARchitecture Platform)' as a national research and development project. Through this demonstration, they confirmed the applicability and effectiveness of the TROSAR platform in real-world railway vehicle operations.
The digital block technology applied this time is designed for digital transformation in the development, production, and utilization of railway products. It provides a simplified information system based on independent and distributed objects. The system allows for interoperability, disassembly, assembly, and integration of objects, making it suitable for the complex and diverse structure of future industries.
The corporation and the research institute plan to pilot the railway virtual environment technology (TROSAR CyberSpace), developed based on this technology, in training programs for railway vehicle maintenance experts. They will review the usability of AR content and discuss detailed implementation plans.
A representative from Busan Transportation Corporation stated that the training program focuses on railway vehicle maintenance education. Since hands-on practice with actual equipment carries the risk of safety accidents and makes repeated mastery difficult, the program allows for the execution of maintenance procedures and troubleshooting, such as disassembly and assembly of braking control devices. This is expected to prevent accidents and improve work efficiency.
Han Seokyun, President of the Korea Railroad Research Institute, said, "We are doing our utmost to commercialize digital transformation platform technology to enhance the international competitiveness of Korea's railway industry in the future," and emphasized, "By making it easy to use at minimal cost, we will accelerate the digital transformation across the entire railway industry."
Lee Byungjin, President of Busan Transportation Corporation, said, "At a time when it is necessary to train railway vehicle maintenance experts to respond to advancing future technologies, the development of digital block augmented reality technology will greatly benefit the corporation and other railway operators pursuing digital transformation," and added, "We will continue to collaborate with the research institute to develop AR content that can be directly applied in the field."
