Gyeonggi Province will implement the ‘Gyeonggi Province Specialized Independence Education’ for children scheduled to leave protective care starting in July.
Children scheduled to leave protective care refer to those in child care facilities, group homes, or foster families who are aged 15 or older and are approaching the end of their protection period. This also includes children with extended protection.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 26th that although it conducted ‘Visiting Independence Education’ for protective facilities such as child care facilities and group homes in the first half of this year, it will start the ‘Gyeonggi Province Specialized Independence Education’ from the second half of this year in response to field opinions emphasizing the need for systematic independence preparation for children nearing the end of their protection.
This education program has expanded its target to include children scheduled to leave protective care, including those in foster care, beyond just facilities.
The education covers eight essential areas for independence, including daily life, utilization of community resources, self-management, social skills, and asset management, structured into lecture-based and experiential education programs. The target for the second half of the year is 130 children scheduled to leave protective care.
Yoo So-jeong, Director of the Child Care Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Considering the voices from the field such as facilities, the Gyeonggi Province Specialized Independence Education is composed of various programs with both lecture-based and experiential education methods," adding, "We will gradually expand the education by preparing more independence programs in the future."
