Gyeongbuk Province announced on the 25th that Gyeongsan City and Uiseong County have been finally selected for the '2024 Smart City Development Project' organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, securing 9.3 billion KRW in national funding by 2026.
The Smart City Development Project is a project by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport that aims to solve various urban issues such as transportation, environment, and safety using ICT technology, as well as to secure the capacity to respond to environmental changes such as the climate crisis and regional extinction, ultimately creating a sustainable and mutually beneficial city.
The project held open calls in three categories: hub-type, small-scale, and solution expansion. Gyeongbuk Province had two final selections: one small-scale project (out of 17 applicants) and one solution expansion project (out of 19 applicants).
Gyeongsan City, which was selected for the small-scale category, secured a total project budget of 19.1 billion KRW (8 billion national funds, 10.4 billion local funds, and 700 million private funds) and will begin the project in the second half of this year.
To address the decline of the local economy caused by the decrease in the youth population, Gyeongsan City will create a data-driven advanced industry activation city by linking and utilizing existing urban infrastructure (such as Gyeongsan Imdang Unicorn Park and Youth Knowledge Playground).
The city plans to establish a foundation for new business jobs by building services that involve youth and citizens, such as AI mobility, Smart Media City Art Solution, Youth Startup Smart Platform, and Data Ecochain Platform.
Meanwhile, Uiseong County, which was finally selected for the Smart City Solution Expansion Project in May, will invest a total project budget of 2.5 billion KRW (1.25 billion national funds, 1.25 billion local funds) to build a comprehensive care system for the elderly population through smart healthcare and AI care systems for single-person households, and create a safe urban environment with smart crosswalks, smart poles, road hazard detection (such as black ice), and an integrated smart city platform.
In addition, Gyeongbuk Province plans to activate the smart city platform by linking the currently being established Wide-area Data Hub with the Smart City Development Project, discovering and providing smart services that residents can truly experience.
Gyeongbuk Province will spare no administrative and financial support to ensure that Gyeongsan City and Uiseong County, which were selected this time, can successfully develop into smart cities, and will continue efforts to promote smart city development projects in even more areas within the province.
Lee Jungwoo, Director of the Metaverse Science Bureau of Gyeongbuk Province, said, "This achievement is the result of the province and cities/counties working together to develop smart cities, and it is significant in that it has laid the foundation for cities and counties in the province to grow together. We will continue to do our best to create sustainable smart cities in the future."
