Copyright Crimes... Government Conducts 'Joint Investigation' with the Philippines and Vietnam

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Copyright Protection Agency agreed on the 25th at the 'International Cooperation Meeting on Copyright Protection' to sign a memorandum of understanding to strengthen international cooperative investigation efforts on copyright crimes with the Philippine National Bureau of Investigation and the Vietnam Ministry of Public Security. They shared the progress of investigations into K-content copyright infringement crimes that occurred in the two countries and discussed future joint operations.

A Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism official stated, "We plan to continuously collaborate with the National Police Agency and Interpol to strengthen the international cooperative investigation system to respond to illegal content duplication," adding, "We will relentlessly track down illegal content distribution organizations and site operators to prevent them from unlawfully seizing creators' rightful earnings."

Since 2022, the government has been building an international cooperative investigation system through initiatives such as the 'International Copyright Forensic Forum.' There have been several meaningful achievements. A representative example is the joint operation conducted last year with the Busan Police Agency, Interpol, and Indonesia. Through international cooperation, important investigative clues were secured in Indonesia, leading to the arrest of a suspect who provided illegal IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) services targeting Korean residents.

A Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism official said, "Copyright crimes that occur overnight across borders online cannot be resolved by any single country alone," and added, "Based on close cooperation with the National Police Agency, Interpol, and the U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), we will prevent K-content copyright infringement crimes."
