Installation of Odor Reduction Devices at 22 Public Sewage Pipelines and 33 Private Septic Tanks This Year... Aiming for Zero Sewage Odor by 2026
Dongjak-gu (Mayor Park Il-ha) announced that it will promote the "Sewage Odor Reduction Project" to resolve residents' discomfort caused by odors and create a pleasant living environment.
The district selected areas with high odor concentrations based on a comprehensive odor reduction plan to achieve zero sewage odor by 2026, focusing on improving facilities at major odor sources and installing odor prevention equipment for intensive management.
This year, the district will improve the living environment by installing 22 pillar-type adsorption decomposition odor reduction devices mainly along public sewage pipelines in Noryangjin-dong, Heukseok-dong, and Sadang-dong sections.
The "pillar-type adsorption decomposition odor reduction device" is a facility that absorbs odors coming from manholes, rainwater inlets, etc., and purifies them using a composite adsorbent.
The target sites include ▲11 locations around Noryangjin 2-dong (Noryangjin Station to Jangseungbaegi Station) ▲4 locations around Heukseok-dong (near Heukseok Station) ▲7 locations around Sadang-dong (near Kiwoom Center in Sadang 4-dong and Sadang 3-dong Community Center). Installation work will begin this month and is expected to be completed by September.
Additionally, the district supports the installation of air supply devices to eliminate odors generated from septic tank facilities in areas with many odor complaints.
Earlier in March, the district conducted a preliminary demand survey and plans to distribute "septic tank air supply devices" to 33 private facilities. These devices supply air into septic tanks, chemically reacting with hydrogen sulfide, the main cause of odor, to eliminate the smell.
Going forward, the district will analyze odor concentration trends through continuous monitoring and install highly efficient odor blocking devices in other key management areas requiring odor improvement, such as Sangdo-dong and Sadang 2-dong, by 2026.
Park Il-ha, Mayor of Dongjak-gu, said, "Through this sewage odor reduction project, we will resolve residents' discomfort caused by odors and improve quality of life," adding, "We will continue to implement various policies to create a pleasant urban environment that all residents can feel."
