Decrease in Yasan Incident Cases... Safety Nowon Shows Results

Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that the 'Living Safety Net Construction Project,' which has been promoted for the safe living of residents, is showing results.

The district has continuously strived to improve residents' safety infrastructure by being the first local government nationwide to establish a mobile disaster safety situation room, secure 24-hour public psychiatric emergency beds, and operate the Nowon Safety Patrol. Recently, these efforts have shown results in various areas.

First, the effectiveness of operating the ‘Nowon Safety Patrol.’ Launched in November last year, the 'Nowon Safety Patrol' operates to dispel community anxiety and prevent copycat crimes by patrolling newly emerging high-crime areas such as trails, walking paths, and neighborhood parks.

According to statistics from the Nowon Police Station, the number of incidents occurring in mountainous areas was ▲15 in 2020 ▲12 in 2021 ▲14 in 2022, but since the 'Nowon Safety Patrol' began activities in November 2023, the total number has noticeably decreased to 2, showing significant results.

The first-ever 24-hour public psychiatric emergency beds secured through an agreement in January this year have also greatly contributed to ensuring the safety of Nowon residents.

This facility resolves the difficulties faced by police officers who previously had to spend long hours transporting patients to medical institutions?sometimes traveling as far as Gyeonggi-do due to lack of available beds at night or on weekends, or waiting until hospitals opened during the day?and protects residents from disturbances and threats caused by psychiatric patients.

In particular, a survey conducted among police officers handling emergency psychiatric admissions at Nowon Police Station showed that 92% responded that the service was helpful. The district plans to continue operating this system to enable rapid response to psychiatric emergencies so that residents can live with peace of mind.

The Nowon District Control Center and CCTV, which cover blind spots such as parks and trails, are also indispensable. In 2020, the center was the first nationwide to capture a drug transaction in real time, apprehended a pickpocket in the same year, and in February this year, successfully caught a thief in real time, achieving consecutive successes.

This year, the district plans to further strengthen the CCTV safety network, which has proven effective in crime prevention. The goal is to significantly increase the number of installed CCTVs to over 3,300 units and add 600 intelligent CCTVs capable of selective monitoring using artificial intelligence technology. The district also directly operates the CCTV control center’s monitoring staff to enhance monitoring operations.

Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “We have promoted ‘Making Nowon Safe’ with the mindset that ‘investment in safety should be more than enough.’ As the project shows results, we will continue to promote the project for the safety of our residents.”
