From July 1, bottled water will be supplied at 11 outdoor heat relief shelters for safety and heat-vulnerable groups
Rainbow parasols available for up to 7 days rental at Seongdong-gu Office, community centers, and sports centers along with spring water storage operation
Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jung Won-oh) is launching the rental projects of ‘Seongdong Saemmul Warehouse’ and ‘Rainbow Parasol’ to help residents stay safe from heat-related illnesses and dehydration during the peak summer heat.
Since 2021, Seongdong-gu has been operating the ‘Seongdong Saemmul Warehouse,’ which provides bottled water to vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people with disabilities who are at risk of heat-related illnesses. Refrigerators have been installed at outdoor cooling shelters along riverside walking trails and sports parks.
This year, due to the noticeably hotter weather, the operation will start 10 days earlier than last year, beginning on July 1. At each designated location, 500ml bottled water will be supplied three times daily, totaling 7,680 bottles.
The ‘Seongdong Saemmul Warehouse’ will operate until August, when the heatwave is most severe, and will be installed at a total of 11 outdoor cooling shelters. Each warehouse will have a dedicated manager from the autonomous disaster prevention team of the local community center to prevent exclusive use of the water or storing personal items in the refrigerators, thereby enhancing convenience for residents.
Additionally, label-free bottled water is provided, and collection bins are placed right next to the warehouses to facilitate easy recycling of the bottles. The collected bottles, made of transparent plastic, will be recycled daily.
The district will also operate the Rainbow Parasol rental project from July 1 to September 30. Since using a parasol can reduce the perceived temperature by about 7℃, the government encourages the use of parasols and public parasol rental services.
Accordingly, Seongdong-gu rents one parasol per person to vulnerable residents living in the district. The maximum rental period is seven days.
Parasols can be rented at a total of 21 locations, including Seongdong-gu Office and local community centers. To rent, residents must bring an ID and fill out a rental application form.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, "Heatwaves during outdoor activities can be another disaster threatening residents’ lives and safety. We will carefully monitor to ensure all residents have a healthy summer and actively strive to provide lifestyle-oriented policies that enhance daily convenience and increase resident satisfaction."
