In commemoration of the 74th anniversary of the Korean War, Daegu City delivered 100 million KRW to the International Rescue Committee (IRC) at 3 p.m. on the 24th at the Sanggyeok Office of Daegu City Hall to support Ethiopian refugees, as Ethiopia is the only African country that participated in the Korean War.
Ethiopia is currently facing a complex crisis, including abnormal weather due to climate change, a food crisis, and regional instability leading to an increase in both domestic and international refugees. It is one of the world's most crisis-stricken and poorest countries, in dire need of humanitarian aid.
Since 2000, Daegu City has been supporting refugees through the International Rescue Committee, which operates refugee programs in Ethiopia.
The International Rescue Committee was established in 1933 with the help of Albert Einstein, a genius physicist who fled to the United States to escape the persecution of Jews by the Nazi regime in Germany. As of 2022, the IRC manages approximately 1.7 trillion KRW in humanitarian funds annually and participates in relief activities in over 40 countries worldwide. In November 2022, the IRC opened its first Asian office in Korea, making it the fifth office after the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and Sweden.
The relief funds provided by Daegu City will be used to supply clean water, provide hygiene kits and emergency food, and support essential medicines and medical equipment for Ethiopian refugees who have suffered for a long time due to conflict and drought.
Hong Joonpyo, Mayor of Daegu, said, "I hope this will be the first step in repaying the grace to Ethiopia, our blood alliance in Africa, who fought until the end in the Nakdong River Battle, the last bastion during the Korean War," and added, "We will continue to spare no support for the reconstruction of Ethiopia and refugee relief in the future."
