Lee Party Leader Before Resignation: "Last Chance to Fix the Mess"
Encourages Installation of Italian Comfort Woman Statue: "Conveyed My Intent as Representative at Unveiling Ceremony"
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, urged the passage of the special investigation law on the Chaesangbyeong case as his final party duty and encouraged the installation of the Peace Statue in Italy. Lee resigned from his position as party leader after the meeting that day.
At the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly on the 24th, Lee said, "Colonel Park Jeong-hoon said at the Legislative and Judiciary Committee hearing, 'Because of one person's rage, many people became criminals,'" adding, "This one statement contains the entire truth of the Chaesangbyeong incident." He continued, "Countless crimes continue to be committed to hide one crime," and said, "This is the last chance to correct the chaotic situation caused by one person's rage." He then emphasized, "I urge President Yoon Seok-yeol," and said, "Please do not abuse your veto power this time."

Lee also mentioned the installation of the Peace Statue in Italy that day. He said, "It is said that the Peace Statue, a symbol of human rights and peace, was installed in Stintino City on the island of Sardinia, Italy," and expressed deep gratitude to many who worked hard for it. Furthermore, he said, "As the leader of the Democratic Party, I personally conveyed my commitment not to stop efforts to protect human rights and maintain peace at the unveiling ceremony of the Peace Statue," adding, "I hope that the newly installed statue on the opposite side of the Korean Peninsula will become a sanctuary of peace where many people, regardless of nationality, visit and newly remember the meaning of peace and human rights."
He then stated, "What is truly regrettable is that the Japanese government and embassy are blatantly obstructing the statues around the world through organized interference," and argued, "The Japanese government must immediately stop denying the past and attempts to distort the war crimes it committed." He also added, "The Democratic Party will do its best to protect the Peace Statue," and "The government should no longer tolerate the behavior of the Japanese government."
