Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, Encourages Proper Use of Doorstep Collection Bins to Reduce Household Waste
Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) announced that it will provide food waste doorstep collection bins free of charge until the end of this year to enable residents to voluntarily create a clean local environment.
The food waste doorstep collection system began as a pilot program in 2014 and was expanded to all neighborhoods in 2017. Previously, a centralized collection system was used, installing shared collection bins where food waste was gathered, which caused inconvenience as residents had to go far to dispose of their food waste. In response, Mapo-gu distributed collection bins free of charge to residents at that time and established the doorstep collection system.
However, since there have been no additional free distributions, residents had to pay to purchase new bins when the existing ones became worn out, damaged, or lost. Using broken bins without replacement caused unpleasant odors and inconvenienced residents, also detracting from the city’s aesthetics.
To address this, Mapo-gu plans to distribute doorstep collection bins free of charge to help hygienically manage food waste and create a clean street environment.
The free distribution targets residents and business operators living in single-family homes, multi-family houses, and villas within Mapo-gu who use food waste doorstep collection bins. Residents wishing to replace worn or damaged bins should bring their ID (business operators must also bring their business registration certificate) and visit the local community service center in their neighborhood. The capacity of the bins provided free of charge is 10L.
In addition, Mapo-gu will promote proper food waste disposal methods when distributing the bins to raise public awareness and make every effort to keep Mapo clean and sanitary 365 days a year.
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “Proper use of food waste doorstep collection bins is expected to reduce household waste and improve the city’s appearance. We have set the distribution period until the end of this year to encourage many residents to participate, so please do not forget to replace your collection bin.”
