Geumcheon-gu Operates Traditional Gochujang Making Program

Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that it will recruit participants for the traditional gochujang-making experience program "Ttukbaegi Boda Jangmat" from June 25 to 27.

"Ttukbaegi Boda Jangmat" is designed as part of proper dietary education to help restore healthy eating habits by experiencing the making of jang, the foundation of Korean cuisine.

The program will be held twice on July 23 at the district office's 12th-floor auditorium, at 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM. A nutritionist will lead the program, covering topics such as the history of Korea's basic jang, gochujang, understanding commercial gochujang and food additives, gochujang-making practice, and recipes using gochujang.

Participants will make traditional gochujang containing traditional grain-based sweetener called jocheong, and they can take home the gochujang they make.

The program will accept a total of 200 participants, and any resident interested in making gochujang can join. Those who wish to participate can apply by phone to the Health Policy Division from June 25 to 27, and the education is free of charge.

The district also operates the "Geumcheon Jangdokdae" experience program annually from February to October, where participants can make traditional doenjang and soy sauce using meju.

Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, "We prepared the 'Ttukbaegi Boda Jangmat' program to restore the disappearing culture of jang-making and to reflect on our eating habits exposed to stimulating foods," and added, "We ask for the residents' great interest and participation."
