[Today’s Weather] Hot in the Seoul Metropolitan Area and Heavy Rain in the South... Heatwave and Monsoon Season Together

After the Rain, the Heat Will Ease Starting from the 24th

On the weekend of the 22nd to 23rd, the Seoul metropolitan area including Seoul and Gyeonggi will suffer from a heatwave, while the southern regions and Jeju Island will experience extreme weather with heavy rain.


According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on the 22nd, rain will fall on the Incheon and Gyeonggi West Coast, Chungnam region, Jeolla region, the southern coast of Gyeongnam, and Jeju Island, and from the morning, the rain will expand to other areas. Most of the rain in the metropolitan area will stop by late afternoon on the same day, but in the inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon, it will continue until early dawn on the 23rd; in the Chungcheong region until the morning; and in the southern regions and Jeju Island, some places will see rain continuing until the morning. In particular, the Korea Meteorological Administration urged special caution as there will be strong winds, thunder, lightning, and very heavy rain in the Chungcheong region, southern regions, and Jeju Island between the 22nd and the morning of the 23rd.

Expected rainfall until the morning of the 23rd is 50 to 100 mm in Gwangju and Jeonnam, with some parts of the Jeonnam coast and eastern inland areas exceeding 180 mm.


Jeju Island is expected to receive 50 to 150 mm, with some mid-mountain and mountainous areas receiving over 200 mm of rain. The Korea Meteorological Administration also reported that in Jeonnam, Jeju, and Gyeongnam regions, there will be places with strong rain falling at a rate of 30 to 50 mm per hour between the 22nd and 23rd, so caution is advised. Expected rainfall in other areas is 5 to 20 mm in southern Gyeonggi, 5 to 30 mm in Gangwon Province, and 10 to 60 mm in Chungcheong regions including Daejeon.


Throughout the weekend, the sky will be mostly cloudy nationwide, but hot weather will continue mainly in the metropolitan area. In some parts of Seoul and Gyeonggi where heatwave warnings are in effect, the humidity will also rise, making the highest perceived temperature around 31 degrees Celsius on the 22nd and around 33 degrees Celsius on the 23rd, resulting in hot conditions.


The highest daytime temperature on the 22nd is expected to be between 23 and 27 degrees Celsius. On the 23rd, the lowest morning temperature is expected to be between 20 and 24 degrees Celsius, and the highest daytime temperature between 26 and 32 degrees Celsius.


This heatwave will ease starting from the 24th as the rain continues, with temperatures returning to levels similar to the average (24 to 29 degrees Celsius).


Meanwhile, the Korea Meteorological Administration urged caution for maritime safety as there will be places with strong winds, thunder, and lightning in most seas until the 23rd.
