"Flooding Just One Month After Move-In"... What Happened at the Newly Built Apartment Where the Elevator Stopped on the 44th Floor?

Cause of Water Pipe Leakage on Rooftop Floor
One Person Trapped After Elevator Stops

Residents of a newly constructed apartment in Daegu are facing inconveniences as water leakage on the rooftop caused water to pour down the stairs like a waterfall, leading to a flood of complaints.

According to reports including those from Maeil Newspaper, on the 18th at 9:15 PM, an elevator in one building of the A Apartment complex in Daegu stopped at the 44th floor, trapping one visitor inside. The fire department deployed three pieces of equipment and eight personnel, rescuing the man 24 minutes after the report was received.

The cause of the accident that day was presumed to be a power outage due to leakage in the water supply pipe on the apartment rooftop. After rescuing the person from the elevator, the fire department shut off the water tank located on the rooftop floor and used a pump vehicle to handle all the leaked water.

Subsequently, various complaint posts related to the accident appeared on the electronic civil complaint window of Buk-gu, Daegu, with titles such as "A Apartment, famous as a water park hotspot," "Investigation and countermeasures regarding A Apartment leakage," and "A full reinspection is needed concerning A Apartment’s poor construction."

On the 19th, a resident who posted a complaint wrote, "The entire building suffered massive damage due to severe leakage," adding, "Since the water did not drain, water was poured down the stairs, turning the entire building into a flood zone, and the stairs leading to the evacuation floor were blocked, forcing us to break through walls." The resident also reported, "The upper floors experienced water outages, and some households experienced internal leakage."

They continued, "Since April, residents of our apartment have repeatedly filed complaints about numerous major and minor defects within the complex, insisting that the building should not have been approved for completion. However, Buk-gu Office hastily approved the completion without acknowledging the massive leakage and major defects," they claimed.

Another resident posted a video showing water pouring down the emergency exit stairs, stating, "From the 49th floor, all households had to endure the sound of a waterfall and water splashing throughout the night, while residents and security guards manually directed the water down one floor at a time."

They lamented, "We experienced a terrifying flood less than a month after moving in. Tons of water seeped into the building, the elevator broke down, and it was truly a disaster situation." They added, "It is impossible to trust safety when a newly built apartment has water leakage defects. We urge Daegu City to form an external inspection committee to conduct an investigation."

It is known that residents of the apartment had been protesting to Buk-gu Office since last month, claiming that temporary use approval was granted despite unresolved defect repairs. The authors of the complaint posts demanded, "Take responsibility for approving completion without proper on-site inspection, implement damage countermeasures and compensation, and conduct a full leakage and safety inspection of the apartment," urging the district office to respond promptly.
