KNB Movement Series 9
The Korea National Ballet (KNB) will hold the 'KNB Movement Series 9' performance for nurturing choreographers at the National Theater's Haneul Theater on the 22nd and 23rd.
The KNB Movement Series is the first project to discover choreographers, initiated after the appointment of Artistic Director and Principal Dancer Kang Sue-jin in 2015. It is a project where KNB members (including advisory committee members) choreograph works, and the Korea National Ballet actively supports them to discover and nurture new choreographers and to create and maintain a unique ballet repertoire for the company.
This year marks the 9th edition, and it is co-hosted with the National Theater and presented as part of the National Theater's season repertoire planning program.
There are six dancers participating as choreographers in this performance: Kim Na-yeon, Kim Jun-kyung, Kim Jae-min, Park Seul-gi, Seon Ho-hyun, and Lee Young-cheol (former principal dancer, current advisory committee member).
Kim Jun-kyung, who took his first step as a choreographer last year, will present 'Noeul (Sunset),' a work expressing the passionate love of two people burning like a dazzling sunset. It is a large-scale piece featuring 16 dancers, combining EDM music and ballet.
Kim Jae-min, who debuted as a choreographer in the previous KNB Movement Series 8 alongside Kim Jun-kyung, will stage 'Eyebrow Counting Day (Seotdalgeureum),' a charming piece depicting the happiness of ethnic customs on New Year's Eve with eight female dancers.
Seon Ho-hyun will express Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 'Path?tique' through ballet. The piece portrays the moment of overcoming anxiety, akin to Beethoven confronting the fear and unease of hearing loss.
Kim Na-yeon will perform 'Right,' a ballet exploring the primal human sense of 'intuition.'
Lee Young-cheol, former principal dancer and current advisory committee member of the Korea National Ballet, uses the traditional instrument 'Jing' as a motif to express the resonance of emotions and energy through the sound of the 'Jing.'
Park Seul-gi, a leading dancer of the Korea National Ballet, will present a new work titled 'OS.' The piece raises the question, "Is human empathy deteriorating due to the development of artificial intelligence (AI)?"
