"Mobile Speed Test Apps Offer Free Data for Communication Quality Measurement"

NIA Service Speed Test App
Exempt from Data Usage Deduction

"Mobile Speed Test Apps Offer Free Data for Communication Quality Measurement"

Data generated during communication quality measurements using mobile phone wireless internet speed measurement applications (apps) will be free of charge starting today.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 20th that the Korea National Information Society Agency (NIA) will exempt data usage deductions incurred during communication quality measurements performed by the wireless internet speed measurement app it operates.

In April, NIA signed a business agreement with the Korea MVNO Association, SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus to discuss measures for exempting data deductions for communication quality measurements.

All wireless internet service users, regardless of their carrier, will be exempt from data usage deductions for up to 50 quality measurements per month when measuring speed using the NIA wireless internet speed measurement app. Each communication quality measurement consumes approximately 900MB of data for 5G services and about 150MB for LTE services.

However, the free data applies only to usage generated during communication quality measurements. Data usage from app downloads, viewing measurement results, and other activities will continue to be deducted from the monthly data allowance as before.

NIA will provide communication companies with quality measurement information from user measurement results, particularly in areas with low downlink speeds, to help the three major carriers improve their communication service quality.

During July and August, an event will be held where participants in wired and wireless internet quality measurements will be entered into a drawing to receive various prizes.

The NIA wireless internet speed measurement app supports both Android and iOS. It is available for free download on Google Play Store, Apple App Store, and One Store.
